Windows Explorer: Using tabs – That’s how it works

Tabs are very helpful in the browser, for example, to work with several websites at the same time. If you often work with multiple folders in Windows 10, 8 or 7, you can also use tabs in Windows Explorer. We show how it works.

By default, Windows 10, 8, and 7 do not support tabs in Windows Explorer for clear, fast, and effective window and folder switching. We show you how to install a tab bar in Explorer with the free tool QTTabBar.

To use tabs in Windows Explorer, do the following:

  • Install the download of the tool QTTabBar.
  • Restarts Windows.

Now you have to activate the tab bar in Windows Explorer. In Windows 10, this is how it works:

  • Press the key combination Windows + E to open the Explorer.
  • Click on the View menu item, click on the down arrow under the Options icon and select the QTTabBar entry.

Windows now displays new folders in the tab bar of the QTTabBar. You can drag folders into the tab bar to open them as new tabs. If you need a second Explorer window, just press the key combination Windows + E.

With the QTTabBar you can copy files from one tab to another by dragging them with the mouse on the appropriate tab. Then, by default, Move To appears when the source and destination are on the same hard disk – so the files are moved. If you want to copy them instead, press Ctrl while the action is Copy to.

The context menu of the individual tabs also opens their folders in their own windows. Select the command Open new window. If you want to duplicate the current tab, you can also use the context menu with the clone this command or with the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + N. Alternatively, you can also display certain functions as menu icons with additional bars. You can also adjust the tab behavior, menu bars and keyboard shortcuts in the settings of QTTabBar. Press Alt + O to open it. Since the settings are very extensive, in the menu item General best secures your working settings under the heading Managing settings with the button Export Now …. Then you can restore them if you’ve gotten lost somewhere and can not find the undo setting.
